Almost any type of window treatment can be ordered and customized for French doors. Most window treatments will be mounted above the doors, so it is important for you to ensure that there is plenty of clearance for opening and closing the doors without obstruction. If the window treatments that you choose will be hanging the entire length of the door, make sure that they do not drag on the floor to hinder opening and closing it.

Depending upon the window treatments that you select, there are a few general guidelines that you can follow. For example, the window treatments should overlap the glass of the doors by one inch on either side. Secondly, you will need to watch out for certain obstructions, like door knobs, to ensure that they do not interrupt the flow of the window treatments. Additionally, you may wish to add brackets to the bottom of the French doors to hold the treatments in place and prevent them from swaying.

Some of the most popular options for window treatments for French doors include:

  • Miniature Blinds – Miniature blinds are available in many different colors and finishes. Their slats are smaller, usually measuring 1” in size, so that they sit tightly against the door, and they can fit easily behind most door handles. If you are worried about cords becoming tangled in door knobs, they are available in cordless options.
  • Wooden Blinds – Because their slats are louvered, wooden blinds can remain fully extended, in order to allow in natural light and to maintain your privacy. They are available in a wide variety of slat sizes, but smaller slat sizes will provide a sleeker profile and better fit for French doors. You can also choose the finish of wooden blinds to match the interior of your home.
  • Roman Shades – Roman shades are one of the most popular options for window treatments when it comes to French doors. Their simplistic, overlapping design instantly adds a sense of grandeur and elegance to one’s home. They are available with or without cords, and can be constructed from a wide variety of different fabrics to allow in varying degrees of light.
  • Traditional Curtains – Traditional curtains for French doors are constructed from sheer fabrics to allow in varying degrees of light. They can be paired with blinds, and in most styles, the curtains are swept away from the center of the door by swags.
